The Minneapolis police chief got married

That’s her, Janeé Harteau, on the left. That’s her bride, Holly Keegel, on the right.

It feels like a different world. I like it.

Tell the International Olympic Committee to protect Olympic athletes and fans by moving the 2014 Winter Olympics out of Russia.

Russia is waging a war on gay people — and Russian politicians have made it clear that they will enforce the country’s draconian new anti-gay rules on both fans and athletes at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

The “gay propaganda” ban makes it illegal to be openly gay and has harsh consequences for anyone convicted of sharing what is considered to be “homosexual information” to minors. A same-sex embrace or carrying a pro-gay sign can lead to arrest and imprisonment. What’s more, the Russian government can detain foreigners for up to 14 days before expelling them from the country if their behavior runs afoul of Russia’s harsh anti-gay statutes. …

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to find a message like this in a Deadpool comic.

School Threatens To Kick Out Transgender Nursing Student For Using Bathroom

A fellow student complained that Alex Wilson was using the women’s bathroom, so the Florida school is making her walk across campus to use a bathroom that’s basically a closet in an administrative building. Unbelievable. Particularly since the lady’s room has, you know, DOORS on all the stalls, and no one can see what you’re doing in there or what parts you’re doing it with. Oh, and the school says if they catch her using the regular women’s bathroom again, they will press charges, which means she’ll be automatically kicked out of her nursing program. Another day, another sterling example of why we need more protection laws for trans* people.

It was the five o’clock shadow that helped give her away – the portrait was not, as it seemed, a rather grand if slightly butch 18th-century lady with a fancy feathered hat but was in fact the Chevalier d’Eon: diplomat, soldier, spy, transvestite.

The National Portrait Gallery has announced the acquisition of its first painted portrait of a man in woman’s clothing; a cross-dresser who enjoyed considerable fame in both high society and popular culture.

Charles Geneviève Louis Auguste André Timothée d’Éon de Beaumont, to give her full name, is one of the most important transvestites in history. She was “a fascinating and inspirational figure”, said Lucy Peltz, the gallery’s curator of 18th-century portraits.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to acquire this portrait. D’Eon is a particularly fascinating and important figure from 18th-century British history.” …

We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male passenger made a pass at him.The lightbulb went off. “Oh,” I said. “I get it. See, you are afraid, because for the first time in your life you have found yourself a victim of unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you.” The boy nodded and shuddered visibly.“But,” I continued. “As a woman, you learn to live with that from the time you are fourteen, and it never stops. We live with that fear every day of our lives. Every man walking through the parking garage the same time you are is either just a harmless stranger or a potential rapist. Every time.” The girls in the room nodded, agreeing. The boys seemed genuinely shocked. “So think about that the next time you hit on a girl. Maybe, like you in the taxi, she doesn’t actually want you to."

Homophobia: The fear that another man will treat you like you treat women.
