Quake In Central Pakistan Makes New Island : NPR

… SIEGEL: Now there are also very intriguing reports that this quake created an island off the coast of Pakistan. How is that?

HARRIS: Well, I can’t vouch for the photo that’s making the rounds on the Internet, but it turns out this is possible. It turns out that buried in the sediment offshore from Pakistan, there’s a type of ice that’s made mostly of methane. And it turns out that during earthquakes, this methane can sometimes be released from its ice form and turn into a gas.

And when that happens, it can create a mud volcano, which can push its way though the surface of the ocean. These mud islands have actually formed in previous quakes in Pakistan, so it’s possible another one has emerged during this quake. But the islands are low-lying and they don’t last very long. They’re - it’s a big surprise though. …

So, no weird temple constructed with abnormal, non-Euclidean geometry loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours, huh?

13-year-old struck by lightning on Friday 13th at 13.13 - Telegraph

14 Aug 2010

Friday the 13th is often thought of as an unlucky day - and it lived up to its reputation for one youngster.

At precisely 13:13, a boy aged 13 was seen by the St John Ambulance team at Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival in Suffolk after he was struck by lightning, a spokesman said.

The boy suffered a minor burn and was taken to James Paget Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Jason Gillingham, county ambulance officer and on scene at the show, said: ”This was a very minor burn to the boy’s shoulder, but he was conveyed to hospital and is recovering well.”

A second teenager and a woman were also struck by lightning but did not need hospital treatment.

The three were watching a display of the Red Arrows during a downpour when the lightning struck.

Batman,Captain America save cat - International - Jamaica Gleaner - Tuesday | September 10, 2013

When a West Virginia home caught fire, trapping a kitten inside, it was Batman and Captain America who came to the rescue.

John Buckland, dressed as Batman, and Troy Marcum, dressed as Captain America, saw smoke at a house nearby when they were entertaining children as part of their business. They ran to the house along with another bystander, kicked in the door, and broke out a window so some smoke could escape.

Buckland, a former firefighter, says he crawled into the front room and felt something furry. He grabbed the animal, ran outside, and gave it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

No one was hurt in the fire, including the rescuers, though Buckland says the cat hissed and swatted at him when it regained consciousness.

A goddamn black widow damn near killed a Colifoniyahn ex-bf. He was sitting down and she rushed him and bit him. He was in the hospital for over a week, and they didn’t think he’d make it. I murdered those eight-legged bastards every chance I got.

GSB #23 (Volume XIV)
Bay Stallion, born 1874
Bred by: Ibn Sbeyni of the Mehed Tribe of the Fedaan of the Sebaa Anazeh
Strain: Seglawi Jedran
Height: 14.2½ hands

From our Arieana Notebook: A Desert-Bred Stallion and treasured within the CMK Heritage as one of the original foundation sires for Wilfrid Scawen Blunt’s and Lady Anne Blunt’s Crabbet Stud in England, Kars was bred in the Syrian desert by Ibn Sbeyni of the Mehed Tribe of the Fedaan of the Sebaa Anazeh and sold by his breeder as a 2-year old to Mahmud Aga, a Kurdish Chief of an irregular cavalry force raised in the northern desert during the Russian war. Mahmud Aga rode Kars in 1877, as a 3-year-old, to the war in Armenia where nearly every other horse perished. Kars was twice wounded by bullets. During the retreat from Armenia to Aleppo Kars appeared so close to death that he was abandoned on the road, but he got up and followed his master. Kars was little more than a skeleton when purchased by the Blunts in Aleppo in December of 1877 for £69. He was shipped to England in July of 1878 where he was the first stallion used at the stud. He was well used as a sire of quality foals and appreciated as one of the most valuable horses they secured. In 1885 Kars was sold to Mr. D. Mackay of New South Wales, Australia for 250 gs. A versatile horse standing 14.2½ hands, he made a name for himself in Australia as a successful sire of buggy horses. He also proved himself on the hunting field in addition to winning prizes at showjumping. (Notes on Kars derived from “A Brief History of the Founding of Crabbet Stud” by Carol W. Mulder. The Arabian Horse Journal, August 1, 1983.)

Name: Dick Van Dyke.

Age: 87.

Appearance: 50% teeth, 50% twinkle.

Dick Van Dyke is still alive? Yes he is. But you get the feeling that the universe isn’t particularly jazzed about this.

Really? Why? He was just rescued from a burning car. It burst into flames as he was driving along the Ventura freeway in Los Angeles, and he was rescued by a group of off-duty nurses who apparently found him slumped over the steering wheel.

Is he OK? He seems fine. Soon afterwards he tweeted a photo of the melted wreckage along with the caption: “Used Jag for sale REAL CHEAP!!”

Thank God. An accident like that would have done most people in. Yes, but this is Dick Van Dyke we’re talking about. He cheats death on a daily basis.

This sort of thing has happened before? You don’t remember the porpoise incident?

The porpoise incident? The porpoise incident. In 2010, Dick Van Dyke fell asleep on his surfboard and woke up surrounded by a swirl of circling fins. He felt the chill of his own mortality sweep through him. But it’s OK, he said, because “they turned out to be porpoises, and they pushed me all the way to shore”.

This is brilliant. Dick Van Dyke is unkillable. How else has he cheated death? He’s quite old. Does that count?

Probably not. Didn’t think so. …

A wonderful Jamaican horse named High Velocity did this to mom, who waved one arm up over her head and yelled, “Ya-HOOO!” She then said, “Okay, that’s enough,” pushed down on his neck, and back down to Earth he went XD
