ANIMATED SOLAR ECLIPSE MAPS: The Great American Solar Eclipse is less than one month away. How much of the sun will be covered over your home town? A great way to find out: Animated eclipse maps created by science-artist Larry Koehn. On his web site, there are individual maps for all 50 US states as well as little-known eclipse zones in Canada and Europe. Check it out!

GIGANTIC JETS OVER HAWAII: Every night, the Gemini cloudcam atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii monitor storms approaching some of the world’s largest telescopes. It often captures bright bolts of lightning lancing down to the ground below the towering dormant volcano. On July 24th it captured something lancing up.

“This amazing lightning-like phenomenon is known as a Gigantic Jet,” says Frankie Lucena of Puerto Rico, who processed the video. “They are related to sprites, but more powerful and easier to see with the naked eye.”

Cloudcam video caught at least three of these jets springing from the tops of a powerful growing thunderstorm. The tallest of them reached all the way to the ionosphere some 80 km overhead.

“Gigantic Jets are much more rare than sprites,” says Oscar van der Velde, a member of the Lightning Research Group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. “While sprites were discovered in 1989 and have since been photographed by the thousands, it was not until 2001-2002 that Gigantic Jets were first recorded from Puerto Rico and Taiwan.” Only a few dozen Gigantic Jets have ever been seen, mostly over open ocean.

Sometimes called “space lightning,” Gigantic Jets and their cousins the sprites are true space weather phenomena. They inhabit the upper atmosphere alongside auroras, meteors and noctilucent clouds. Some researchers believe they are linked to cosmic rays: subatomic particles from deep space striking the top of Earth’s atmosphere produce secondary electrons that could, in turn, provide the spark for these upward bolts.

The link to cosmic rays is particularly interesting at this time. For the past two years, space weather balloons have observed a steady increase in deep space radiation penetrating our atmosphere. This increase is largely due to the decline in the solar cycle. Flagging solar wind pressure and weakening sunspot magnetic fields allow more cosmic rays into the inner solar system–a trend which is expected to continue for for years to come. These changes could add up to more Gigantic Jets in the future. Stay tuned!

Eleanor Penny: Compulsory Purchase Orders

Kensington and Chelsea Council has said it will rehouse 68 families from Grenfell Tower in luxury Kensington Row apartments, where prices start at £1.7 million. But the housing crisis that led to the fire – the overlapping effects of underdevelopment, neglect, cuts and sell-offs of social housing stock – has left many other people in the borough homeless, or in unaffordable or substandard accommodation. Thousands languish on waiting lists for the ‘very few social housing properties available’. Meanwhile, 1399 privately owned homes in the borough lie empty. Senior Labour Party politicians have suggested that the council should use compulsory purchase orders to ‘requisition’ empty investment properties. The idea was met with outrage from people scandalised by the thought of a government ‘land grab’: ‘The state shouldn’t seize private property backed by the implicit threat of violence,’ GQ’s political correspondent, Rupert Myers, tweeted. But councils have been using compulsory purchase orders for years.

Myers et al. didn’t protest when Newham Council used them in the run-up to the Olympics, to evict residents of sites now home to luxury apartments and underused sports facilities. The measly compensation meant that many former residents – such as those of the Carpenters Estate – were forced not only out of their homes but out of London altogether. The new housing built on the site has some provision for ‘affordable housing’. But ‘affordable’ is defined as ‘no more than 80 per cent of market value’, and over the Olympic regeneration period, from 2005-13, house prices in the surrounding areas went up by 45 per cent. Wages, needless to say, didn’t.

David Bromwich: Trump and ‘The Purloined Letter’

The email from Donald Jr may be only the latest candidate for ‘the smoking gun’ or the ‘fire where there’s smoke’ – pet clichés that jostle for priority in the 24/7 news captions – but it leaves no doubt that the morale of the Trump campaign was such as to permit collaboration with Russians against American citizens and institutions. And yet, even if materials on Clinton were received directly and used, it isn’t clear this would have violated the law. Like the contacts with Iran by the Reagan campaign in 1980, or with South Vietnam by associates of Nixon in 1968, the Trump-Russia connection is shocking mostly as an instance of shabby intrigue for political gain. Three Republican presidential campaigns have acted on the belief that winning an election was really worth that much. The non-stop fever pitch of the establishment press would seem less misjudged if Trump were the anomaly they take him to be.

Mainstream media are using their peck of Trump a day to keep ratings high while making it impossible for him to govern: just the thing Fox did for 16 years to Bill Clinton and Obama. The retaliation is symmetrical and warranted, but it does nothing to advance the cause of a political opposition. The Democrats, still looking to retrieve the stolen election but uncertain what opening to pursue, seem almost united in pushing for confrontation with Russia; guided, in this, by the unvaried diet of the media and the mythology of the Cold War – an epoch whose non-mythological terrors few of them experienced as adults. By keeping Trump in the news as both enemy and a source of scandal, they prevent their own fresh talents from ever appearing on the front page. Well advised as they may be about Russia’s intervention and Trump’s depravity, they are looking for a police-detective solution to a political problem.

I love that everyone’s marching out of the giant Solar Lion’s face, and is eventually filtered thru Thoth. Thoth was often associated with the Moon, which reflects the Sun’s light. Is the energy being amplified, like a telescope; or must it come only thru a mirror b/c direct experience would be destructive?

And just whose cute li'l face w/ze Big Earz is on the very tip????

Kenguru is a tiny electric hatchback for wheelchair users
By Ellis Hamburger, theverge.com

Kenguru’s electric car has no seats, and you drive it by putting your hands on motorcycle-style handlebars. It’s built for wheelchair users, who can roll right through the rear hatch of the car into the driver’s area. The Austin-based…

THIS IS SO COOL.

fucking amazing wow

NO BUT DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW GREAT THIS IS? DO YOU REALLY? PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS CAN HAVE SMALL CARS NOW, THEY DON’T HAVE TO RELY ON EXPENSIVE LIFTS TO HELP GET THEM INTO CARS, THEY DON’T HAVE TO MODIFY THEIR CARS FOR THEIR NEEDS BECAUSE THE CAR IS ALREADY DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THEM. THIS IS ACTUALLY SO GREAT AND IT GIVES SO MANY PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE MORE INDEPENDENT AND IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY!

Have I reblogged this already? Don’t care.

Also for those worried about prices: it’s about $25,000 when it comes out, so about the price of a mid-sized car. And there might be grants for it.
